ELCON Systemtechnik and Swissfibre Systems AG, a company of the CATV Group headquartered in Basel, have formed a strategic business alliance with the objective to develop new and innovative products and solutions for Fiber to the Home (FTTH-) networks. First results are the deployment of ELCON´s Blue Wing Fiber Gateways in the Swissfibre Systems network and the launch of the first universal “optical fiber socket” – FTTHomebox, developed by CATV.
This new alliance is mainly focused on the joint development of technologies and products. Through innovation there is a huge potential to boost the rapid spread of optical fiber networks, reduce costs and enable faster and, above all, customer-friendlier deployment. The new FTTHomebox is based on a patented system architecture to terminate fiber cables at the subscriber and has interfaces for direct connection of TV-sets and data systems.
“The success of optical fiber networks is not only a question of broadband Internet access, but will also be based on the provision of basic TV and radio services”, says Patrick Portmann, CEO at Swissfibre Systems. “The FTTHomebox is the very first device that can offer both services independent from each other, thus being able to address the mass market”, Portmann continues.
Werner Neubauer, CEO at ELCON, is also enthusiastic about the partnership: „ELCON´s partnership with Swissfibre Systems is an important step in creating new products and developing new markets. A close cooperation between manufacturer and network provider is the enabling element to create innovations and products, which will meet the challenging requirements of “real life” network rollouts. Consequently, this is enabling a rapid market development.“
