Alternative BroadbandThe situation
Coaxial cable networks are in fact buried treasures that are worth being lifted. Particularly IT- and telephone services offer a wide range of opportunities to create added value for customers and to explore new markets. ELCON has decided to meet this challenge, and to tap into these resources by offering an alternative solution for enhancement of deployed cable networks. Hereby every level 4 CATV operator is familiar with a serious problem: the closer to the subscriber´s home an existing TV cable network needs to be upgraded (e.g. for fast Internet access), the higher are the costs for these refurbishment measures, which make them economically not justifiable. Furthermore, the required comprehensive building activities for replacing the cable are often forbidden or impeded on the grounds of structural engineering, preservation orders or immission control. The solution
After a series of successful trials, ELCON Systemtechnik GmbH offers the already proven system ELCONnect® coax, which effectively uses legacy cable structures for transmitting high-bit rate, bidirectional data streams and thus avoids the aforementioned disadvantages. Perfectly suited for any type of coaxial cable networks in tree- or star structure, the system represents a very efficient option for network upgrading. No matter, if a broadband Internet connection is needed in a hotel room, or if certain value-added services have to be offered in the cable TV network – there are numerous fields of application.
A brief description
ELCONnect® coax is a cost-effective technology for the transmission of voice, data and multimedia services via coaxial cable, e.g. over a deployed cable television network. ELCONnect® coax allows provisioning and distribution of broadband Internet access, Voice over IP, IP-TV and Video-on-Demand. ELCONnect® coax offers a unique, reliable and interference-proof broadband upgrade of cable TV networks – based on coaxial cables – without having to replace the cable infrastructure. Whether or not they provide feedback channel capability, the ELCONnect®-coax systems are designed for data rates of up to 200 Mbps. Compared with competing technologies, up to 70% of the total costs can be saved.
Application fields and potential customers
- Internet- and cable network operators, antenna associations (e.g. offering Internet and cable television over one and the same cable infrastructure)
- Hotels, pensions, spas, retirement homes (e.g. subsequent provisioning of Internet accesses in individual rooms over the existing cable TV network)
- Housing companies / housing industry (e.g. networking of PCs or supply of Internet and cable TV services over the same cable infrastructure)
- Hospitals, doctor´s surgeries, schools (e.g networking of PCs)
- Shipping companies / the marine (e.g. provisioning of Internet- and cable TV connections in the individual cabins)
- Networking of business clients and end customers
Everywhere, where: ... a cost-efficient network upgrade is required for small up to medium-sized groups; ... by now there is no feedback channel capability and the head stations have not yet been enlarged; ... hotels, hospitals or housing companies wish to offer IP services for challenging customers.
Characteristics and applied technologies:
- Smooth integration into legacy systems and network structures
- coexistence with neighbouring TV signals supplied through the same cable
- easy planning and installation
- Master-Client principle for structured network topology and highest safety demands
- Master and Client are responsible for data formatting and modulation to provide for bidirectional transfer over the coaxial cable network, including the provisioning of all interfaces for Ethernet- and coaxial connection → Triple-Play over cable TV networks
- Gross data rate 200 Mbps; net data rate ca. 85 Mbps (depends on the number of Clients connected to the Master, as well as on the quality of the transmission line)
- Large range (up to 1500 m), high availability and quality of the data signal
- Optionally expandable with help of repeaters, no restriction within a cable TV network, DOCSIS-supplement, Fiber-Coax conversion
Advantages
- for cable TV providers:
- Reduction of costs and investments
- Enhanced service range of the CATV networks
- Consolidation of the market position due to faster customer connection
- for Internet service providers and other content providers:
- Increased number of Internet accesses and services
- Enlarged service offering
- Exploration of new markets and establishment of new partnerships
- for owners of housing associations, public buildings, hospitals and hotels
- Special offers for information services; individual telco services, Intranets and public WLAN hotspots over the deployed cable TV infrastructure
- Independence from external service providers
- Improvement of comfort of living
